Racer, Patriot, Mechanic, Inventor, and Casanova. Smokey was a mechanic and car designer associated with motorsports in the United States.
He was deeply involved in the early years of NASCAR , and is probably most associated with that form of racing, where he participated as a racer, designer, and other jobs relating to the sport but was best-known as a mechanic, builder, and crew chief. He was renowned as a crotchety, crusty, opinionated character who "was about as good as there ever was on engines". In 1996, Smokey sat down and started writing his history of racing to make sure that it would be preserved. What he ended up with is 650 pages that covers a history of his life, stock car racing, his years at Indy and all of his inventions.
"I've spent hours blowing off my other duties here at the office, unable to pull myself from these sweet, straight-shooting pages." Hot Rod Magazine
