The Bruce McLaren Supporters Club Contact Page

Welcome to our new Supporters' Club Contact page. We have been asked to provide this to enable enthusiasts/supporters of the Bruce McLaren Trust, to post details about themselves, allowing contact to be made with others.

It is also an opportunity to put forward  information/stories about Bruce, his team and their exploits so that others may enjoy them.

This section also allows queries to be posted allowing the Trust to respond. We have had many queries via the Guest book, but unfortunately, no allowance was made for e-mail address, this section we hope resolves this issue.

Please add this to your guest book. This was the content of an E-Mail I sent to my friend Lee Bowerman who shares my passion with our sport, when I was so motivated by a pic of Bruce's Mk-8B: This was Brucies personal car. Imagine a cool spring morning, a bit of dew on the roof and slight fog in the gulleys and you don your goggles (no helmet) drivers suit and gloves. Electrical is turned on. Your dry sump buzzes fuel pump sounds a report. Push the hot button and the response is more sensual than audible. Your lower torso shakes and your heart rate lowers as the machine that you now wear like a glove has only surprises with physics.

I know this sounds a little over the top but this covers what I feel when I see an art form such as this. The fact that I saw this car when it was new in Bruce's hands and I can hear his voice in my memory now, when on a warm Friday morning, June 5th of 1964 as he alighted from his then record setting prior personal car, a Cooper Oldsmobile to his East facing spot on level 2 in Mosport's pits. To greet Bruce on this morning was a short by physical stature and giant in every other way, Jim Clark. Bruce pulled up his goggles to confer with Jim who was attired in a white Egyptian cotton creaseless shirt and Black dress pants with a crease in the front and rear that could cut wood. Jim's tie was a shortish wool tartan. This image seemed to me at the time as the pinnacle of post war gentlemen plying their trade in a fleeting world but would have been as at home in the cock pit of a Hurricane or Spit.

Kindest regards,

Paul Matthews

This site realy brings back the memories of seeing the orange Mclaren's back in the sixties. I'd been to only one race, at Mosport in Bomanville, Ontario. I was too young to get to the races on my own but I enjoyed seeing any television coverage. I used to race slotcars and I built a 1/24 scale M6B, Bruce's #4 with all the detail. Those were great days and it was a sad day when Bruce McLaren died.

The first ever motor race that I attended Was the International Trophy on May 15th 65.I was invited at short notice by friends of my parents (I was 15 at the time)and knew virtually nothing about the sport. I remember the supporting sports car race being won by Bruce Mclaren in I believe an M1B. For his lap of honour his wife joined him in the car and they shot off up the pit straight with Bruce so happily waving at the crowd that at one stage he drove off the track and half way up the safety banking. Having myself family in New Zealand, and appreciating the fellows style I became a firm supporter of this man from down under. Can anyone else remember this incident?

Can anyone advise if the Can Am racers got the open chamber heads before Febuary 1969 Did they have another source for the alloy heads other than Chevrolet.

Sorry for the questions, guys but am into Chevy alloy race motors, and the above has had me puzzled for a while. Thank you, Terry [email protected]

What an absolutely wonderful site - you should be well pleased with the result so far. Apart from a long career in the music industry and now an independant label owner Ive started a production venture concentrating on some of the classic periods of motor sport that havent been documented well or in some cases not at all. The first project is documenting the CAN AM series from 1966-74 working in conjunction with US based Marilyn Halder (then spouse of Lothar Motchenbacher - the most prolific racer of the series 52 races from 71 events). Its a combination of hours of excellant super 8 and 16mm 'home movie' footage from Marilyns collection + actual network footage & stills from that period - were looking to release that in most global markets early 2005. The second project Im researching now is the history of motor racing in Australia from 1960 - 1975 specifically the Tasman Series - Gold Star - Australian Sports Car Championships - Australian Touring Car Championships. As with the CAN AM project Im interested in any 'home movie' footage or network footage, video footage and/or still photography from the above period for inclusion in the program. If theres anyone out there who can help or point me in the right direction please by all means email me at steve @capricornmedia.com.au In the meantime congratulations again on a great site.

I wonder if you can help me with some information about a McLaren M8F (or M8FP?) CanAm racer. The car in question is chassis no. 72-04 which was used for a Mercedes-based Gp.7/CanAm engine programme by the then-independent AMG company. Hans Heyer drove the car in the Imola Interserie round that year, but failed to finish. A turbocharged engine was planned but never materialised. Do you know what became of this chassis?

The link leads to a picture of the car on the AMG premises.

Thank you!

Are the prices listed in the "Bruce McLaren Trust Merchandise" form New Zealand dollars or US dollars? I would like to order a "Can-Am Logo" Denim shirt. Are sizes comparable to US sizes? Also, would it be possible to include an order for the Can-Am Champions poster with a shirt merchandise order?

Help to find information about anown monocoque racecar I have a racecar unown with have been in my own for 10 years. It vas a big storry about the car in USA Vintage Racecar - magazin in Februari this year. We call it the "mystery car" becourse i dont know the orign of the car. I have been surching for information about the car for 10 years but with now results. Try now whans more and send her som information about the car and ask at the same time if You have anny ideas for the orign. Incl. Send some good pictures and a sign from the car that is difficult to read.

Best Regards Hans Hallberg / Malmoe / Sweden

Send here a part of the article. For the Mystery Car, we have our friend Peter Bryant to thank for bringing it to our attention. Bryant, of course, built the famous Ti 22 "Titanium Cars" and also the Shadow Mk II/IIIs in the old Can-Am. That makes him a subject matter expert, which is why an owner in Sweden emailed him these pictures and asked if he recognized the car. Confessing he was stumped, Bryant passed the query on to us. The owner is Hans Hallberg of Malmoe, Sweden. He calls himself a hobbyist race car restorer, though pictures of other cars he's done indicate professional expertise. He has owned this vehicle since 1992, when he purchased it as a burned-out wreck from what he describes as a "Jaguar dump" in Sarasota, Florida. There was no legible identification on the vehicle, nor did the seller know its history, except that it dated from the 1960s, and that it came to the wrecking yard from an insurance company. Mr. Hallberg says he bought it "as a McLaren," but now doubts that is true. We agree. As restored by Hallberg, the monocoque chassis does not look like any McLaren's, nor does the suspension. But neither does the car seem to be a Lola, or any of the other well-known sports racers of the late '60s. Complicating the puzzle is the glass fiber nosepiece, the only large piece of bodywork that came with the car. Hallberg believes it's an actual front end off a Ferrari 312P, the enduro racer of the early 1970s, altered to fit this chassis. Since the original tail section was missing, he's fabricated a new one to match the style of the nose. Not visible in the photos are what Hallberg describes as curved glass fiber rocker panels that originally covered the chassis sides. He says they were painted in red and white horizontal stripes "just like a GT40." According to Hallberg's account and his pictures of the chassis, it is a full-length monocoque carrying the engine between rearward extensions. The primary tub material is aluminum, with steel subframes front and rear. Fuel is carried in either side for a total capacity of 26 gallons. Wheelbase is 97.5 inches. Suspension is all-independent, using Carrera springs and Koni shocks. The brakes are Delco Moraine, with an Airhart master cylinder. Wheels are 15-inch Keystones, with 8-inch rims front, 10-inch rear. There was a Holley-carbureted 350 Chevy in the car when Hallberg got it, but he sees signs of different original mounts for some other powerplant. The transaxle is a 5-speed ZF, though Hallberg suspects that is not original either. Curiously, because this is unusual in such racers, the driver sits on the left side. Many of these details suggest a machine built in the USA or Canada. Most likely it was built as a racer, rather than a street car, because of the high-grade equipment Hallberg mentions -- fuel cells, braided hoses, adjustable springs and shocks, brake bias adjuster. And evidently it was built by someone knowledgeable about the state of the art in the latter half of the 1960s. If the inspiration was indeed the Can-Am series, the window is pretty narrow. Lola's T70 of 1965 was the first commonly-seen aluminum monocoque sports car, but by 1968 most competitive Can-Am teams were abandoning small-block power. However, this car's relatively small fuel capacity indicates it wasn't intended to race in the Can-Am, where 50-plus gallons would have been necessary for even a small-engined car to run the typical 200-mile distances non-stop. Also, the brands of transaxle, brake and wheel aren't those we'd expect on top-line Can-Am cars of the era. And LHD steering is odd -- not unheard of, just unusual, because of gear linkage issues. What about that 1972-style body? Is it original to the car? We don't know, but if so, it means construction lasted several years. The project must have been launched by an individual or a small, underfunded group, and been obsolete before it was done. That would imply this car probably doesn't have much of a racing history. On the other hand, if the original brand of engine was changed, the same could well be true of the bodywork. And this car did experience enough adventure to result in a fire. Well, those are the clues we have. How do you read them? Isn't this fun! This sort of puzzle comes up every often in our world, but it's always enthralling. A car like this is not just a car. It's the tangible record of human inspiration, imagination, ambition, audacity, determination, toil and, no doubt, tears. Someone invested his soul here. We should honor that. Hans Hallberg feels that way, too. He writes, "My idea has been to not change [anything]. This is a historycar...I can't be the person that spoiled something that somebody before me have spend so much thinking and testing [on]."

Send me a mail on [email protected]. so I send you pictures on mail.

Regards Hans Hallberg

Reference the "great man's" biography: His race wins also included the Argentine G.P. in 1960. His win at Teretonga was in the Owen Organisation factory BRM P126 V12- not in his own car. Even when the fortunes of the Coopers in F.1 were on the wane by 1962, (Jack Brabham left in 1961 to build his own), Bruce still managed to win at Monaco and with three third places in Britain, Italy, and in the U.S. G.P. and a second in South Africa, he was third in the World Championship for 1962. I have a memorable photo of him at Pukekohe in the special Tasman Cooper-Climax built for the 1964 championship series which he won. R.M.

Would it be posable for the Bruce McLaren Trust to look into getting Bruce's original logo (the Kiwi crest) onto the current Formula 1 cars? It would be great for the rest of the world to see where The McLaren Team originated from. I agree with Bruce's daughter's comments on the recent documetary on TV1 that New Zealand should have a bigger following of the McLaren Team (such as Italy is proud of Ferrari)! Perhaps the Supporters Club could organize get-togethers of members for social events and posably live screenings of F1 races on a big screen? You can contact me at my email address to let me know what you think of the ideas.

Greetings from the USA. Two short questions: Does anybody know the whereabouts of the Mini Cooper that Bruce drove in the Tasman support races in 1963 or 64? It was registered as (New Zealand) BH4224 and had a Formula Junior engine in it. And, does anybody know the whereabouts of Wally Willmot who was Bruce's machanic in the early days? I believe that Wally was originally from the Timaru area (although I could be wrong on that). The last contact I had with Wally was in Melbourne in the middle '70s. He had some very special stories on those early days in Europe with Bruce and latterly the Can-Am days. I wonder if anybody ever interviewed him and put them to print? Thank You. Brent Benzie

Recently a great friend and supporter of Bruce passed away, John Cooper. Many of Bruces fans will remember the early days of Cooper Single seaters in which Bruce so succesfuly raced. Lis & I where lucky enough to meet the man himself late last year, at probably one of his last ever public apperances. It was during the build up the 40th Birthday Party at Silverstone for the Mini, another vehicle which is automaticaly linked with the Great Man. Lis and I travelled to the UK for the event, as well as to do a few other other things, and made a personal pilgrimage to Ferring in Worthing Sussex where we spent an afternoon visiting Cooper Garages and meeting Johns Son Mike and other Family memebers as well as John himself. On learning we had come from New Zealand he launched enthusiasticly into a story about Bruce, and how back in the late 60's, he Denny, Bruce and asorted others spent a weekend deep sea fishing in the Bay of Islands New Zealand. He spoke warmly of Bruce and his racing success and spoke of how saddened he was by Bruces accident & death. A great man who will be sorely missed by many Classic car & motor sport fans. I have included a link to my own website on which you can find a picture of Lis & I with John, as well as our story, not as spectacular as Bruces story, but the Story of another couple of Kiwis competeing internationaly...oh and by the way we finished 33rd out of 120 odd starters, not bad for our first outing

As one who is lucky enough to have known the early days of Bruce, as I lived in Remuera (in Koraha st) and used to watch Bruce , firstly in the Austin and later in the Austin Healey. I saw his spectacular Hillclimbing abilities (sliding on dirt roads)and then at Ardmore, watching from "College corner"- in various cars over the following years. Today, for me ,these great memories now raises a question: "Is there any signage, or a poster, or ANY sort of visual recognition at the site of Les's origional garage on Remuera Rd that indicates the incredible heritage that stemmed from this address??
